About DJBFA
Danske Jazz, Beat og Folkemusikautorer (DJBFA) [The Danish Society for Jazz, Rock and Folk Composers] is Denmark’s largest association of professional composers and songwriters. The association was founded in 1973 and has its roots in jazz and folk music and especially in the all-engulfing youth movements of the nineteen-sixties, when authoring one’s own words and music was considered essential.
The main objectives of the association are to secure and optimize its members’ economic interests and to bring about a sense of community and a network that builds upon the solidarity among rhythmic music’s many different genres and expressions.
Culturally speaking, and also when it comes to legal matters, DJBFA supports the creative process from the very inception of the idea to the finished work’s meeting with its audience and the market.
The association is represented in all of the organizations that take care of the practical economic administration of composers’ and lyricists’ interests: organizations like KODA (a non-profit collective rights management society); NCB (the Nordisk Copyright Bureau, which administers copyrights in the recording and production of music on CD, DVD, film, video and the Internet, on behalf of composers, lyricists and music publishers); and COPYDAN (an organization set up by artists, authors, producers and publishers with a view toward representing their rights, wherever appropriate to the issue at hand).
DJBFA also represents the association’s members’ interests in the Folketing (the national legislature) and in ongoing negotiations with various governmental agencies and other official authorities.
Moreover, DJBFA is represented in every forum where composers, along with other artists living in Denmark, are working to promote the cultural life and creative/performing artists’ interests.
As a member, one can seek support for his or her work as a composer and/or lyricist, in the form of work stipends, travel grants, retreats and legal and technical advice and assistance. The association also arranges members’ evenings, centering on professionally oriented and social content, and offers a range of specially designed courses to its members.
Every year, DJBFA invites its members to a well-attended General Meeting, which is capped off with a party and an awards ceremony.
DJBFA publishes the members’ magazine, KOM_POST, and also frequently sends out items of information over the Internet with a wide range of information relevant to people creating music.
In order to become a member, it is necessary to apply for membership; the application is then put before the association’s board – composed of members who volunteer for service – for approval and acceptance.
Application for membership can either be made by phone or by visiting the association’s secretariat
DJBFA Gråbrødretorv 16, 2. sal 1154 Copenhagen K Denmark. Telephone: +45 3312 0109 between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM on weekdays or by visiting the association’s website, www.DJBFA.dk, where a special application for membership in DJBFA can be found.
It is a necessary prerequisite for membership in DJBFA that one be a member of a collective rights management society like KODA or a similar “sister” organization and also that one can document a certain annual income generated by the public use of one’s musical works.
